Town of Ruston Becomes a City
We just wanted to wish a quick congratulations and good luck to the Town of Ruston, which just this week made the switch from “town” to “city.”
To be more specific, Ruston is no longer a “fourth class town;” it is now a “second class city.”
The main difference between a city and a town is in the amount of autonomy the municipality has – more for a city than for a town. Ruston’s citizens will now have the power of referendum, their mayor will have veto power, and the council will be able to set policies and pass laws that go beyond the powers specifically given by the state.
And, as it turns out, things won’t be changing that much; Ruston will still be keeping the name “Town of Ruston,” and only changing to a city in legal status. In keeping with Ruston’s small town vibe, town city officials celebrated the change with some homemade cider.
Best wishes to you, Town of Ruston, and don’t let anyone call you a second class city.

Town changes to City when it’s really just a neighborhood. Ruston can’t be all things to all people… or can it?

Maybe this will keep Ruston’s cops busy with “city crime” and no time to be issuing “small town” traffic tickets. Wishful thinking.

Thanks all! I kinda wish our new city officials had shared their “cider” with us — maybe I’d be able to celebrate a little better ;) Great things are ahead for us. Thanks for the interest!
