UPS House Falls Down ... Improvements Ahead

The University of Puget Sound’s goal of creating a more inviting entrance on the east side of the campus is one step closer with the demolition of the house at 15th and Alder. According to the UPS website, the two homes on the NW and SW corner of that intersection will be removed to make way for a new entrance and enhanced greenspace. Ninety percent of the houses and their contents will be recycled with the salvageable building materials heading to Habitat for Humanity.

Just to set the record straight, those two houses ended up mostly at the LRI landfill near Graham today (June 3) the same place much of Tacoma’s garbage ends up, just as we suspected.
I know, we followed the truck with its contents from the demolition site. Speaking with a worker at the landfill—it’s not a recycling center, but a dump.
As for any naysayers- we have its journey on video to prove it. We have spoken with a UPS official about the “recycling materials” final resting place and alerted them to the issue of the discrepancy in the stated University goals. They assured us they are working hard to make sure the same does not happen to some other demolition materials on houses slated to be demolished later this summer. University staff assured us that UPS expressly contracted in the new entry project that a large percentage of the materials be recycled for reuse and didn’t know what the contractor was ultimately doing with the “recycling material”.
Be this a warning for all green builders and folks out there wanting their projects to be “green”. Might want to double check where and how exactly that contractor is processing all that unwanted material to be “recycled” and not going to that magical place called AWAY (better known as the LRI landfill.)……!

Why didn’t they just post something on Craigslist? seriously! FREE HOUSE COME AND GET WHAT YOU CAN!

I understand how so many folks are worshiping in the temple of green and all…but c’mon. Some clown wasted time, fuel (and precious CO2) to follow trucks all the way out to Graham for video tape evidence?

Sheesh…the Green Gestapo is at work.

I’m sure that Concerned Neighbor wasn’t there for the entire demo- perhaps some of the materials were legitimately recycled.
