UWT Invites You to Celebrate
There’s going to be a parade in downtown Tacoma, and you’re invited. New and returning students from the University of Washington Tacoma will fill the streets with purple and gold this Friday for a processional to mark the University’s 2012 Convocation.
Actually, it will be more like six five separate processionals, beginning at six different locations in downtown, and converging on campus to welcome this year’s new students. The parade will be followed by a brief welcome from UWT Chancellor Debra Friedman and Mayor Strickland, and a campus fair featuring Tacoma businesses and nonprofit organizations.
This is the first time the University has held such a grand event, and the first convocation for the school since 1999. The six five parades from different community partner locations is meant to symbolize UWT’s mission of working in concert with the community. And that’s where you come in; you’re invited to join in the parade, welcoming new students to Tacoma and the University. Wear your purple and gold, and join in the festivities, with musical accompaniment including Native American drums, a middle school drum line, a kazoo band, and more.
The processionals will depart starting at 1:45 p.m. from the six locations:
- Al Davies branch of Boys & Girls Club
- The Broadway Center for the Performing Arts
- KeyBank
- The Tacoma Art Museum
- The Museum of Glass
Native Quest
A map of the processional routes and addresses for each location is available online at tacoma.uw.edu/convocation.
Tables are still available at the community fair for local business and nonprofit organizations that wish to sell products and provide students with information about their products or services. All types of businesses are welcome.
