UWT, City Partner on Parking Program

Students at UW Tacoma can now sign up to participate in a trial parking program that comes out of a partnership between the University and the City of Tacoma. City staff and the University have developed a pilot program that will allow students to purchase quarterly parking passes to park in under-utilized downtown lots at discounted rates.

The passes would allow students to park in either Convention Center or Glass Museum parking an average of two times a week over an 11 week quarterly period (up to 22 times at $66 per quarter). A special trial rate of $1 per hour for hourly parking at the Convention Center will also be available during Spring Quarter. The Convention Center parking will not be available to students as a part of the program on dates of large events.

The City hopes to improve student access and parking around the campus, and to encourage use of part-time parking passes, while freeing up on-street parking for other users.

The goal is to encourage UWT students and other short-term parkers to park in the underutilized areas of the GTCC and foster future acceptance of a part-time permit. The special discounted rate will remain in effect through the end of the spring quarter. Revenues and impacts will be monitored regularly to determine if and when the program may need to be adjusted.

This seems like a good partnership that provides options to students and fills a few empty parking stalls. Do you have any other partnership or parking ideas?

Sounds like a good idea from the city to lease out underutilized parking spaces. Nice to see the city making better use of their properties and parking stalls. A lot of businesses have underutilized parking garages that students could use at a discounted price….whatever the market for them is.

The Tacoma Dome parking lot sits empty most days. Students could park there and take the free Link to get back and forth between Union Station and Freighthouse Square.
