Walk Tacoma 2012 - Kicks Off This Wednesday
Update/reminder: The first Walk Tacoma Walk is this Wednesday in Wright Park.
Walk Tacoma 2012 kicks off in two weeks this Wednesday! with a walk through Wright Park and the Stadium District on Wednesday, April 4. The inaugural walk of the series is sponsored by The Hub and hosted by Downtown on the Go and the American Heart Association, in partnership with Metro Parks. The walk celebrates National Walking Day with a “power walk” led by fitness trainer Paige Van Der Vliet of Tacoma Living Fit, and a historical walk led by Melissa McGinnis and Erik Hanberg of Metro Parks.
Downtown on the Go and the American Heart Association partner on the walks with the shared goal of encouraging residents and employees to add walking to their daily routines. “Our joint goal is for residents and employees to add walking into their daily routine, whether it is at a lunch break, parking a little further away for added exercise, or walking to and from work,” said Kristina Walker, Downtown On the Go Manager. Through this connection between Downtown On the Go and the American Heart Association DOTG hopes to get people to adopt an active lifestyle and for companies to encourage their employees to incorporate physical activity into their day. Walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. By walking as little as 30 minutes per day one can improve their circulation, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and promote weight loss, according to the AHA.

That sounds like a nice time! I’ll have a bit of lunch at one of the local imbiberies when I’m done walking. I hope the weather stays like this!

I’m looking forward to the Brewery District Walk in a couple weeks – Michael Sullivan’s stories are always entertaining.

Here’s a small report on the walk:
Although registration begins at 11, the walk doesn’t take place until noon, so there is plenty of time to get there. There were two options: Power walk or historical walk. On the power walk, the group took fitness bands and did excercize intervals around the park, looping the bands around various posts and other fixed objects. The historical tour was an easy stroll at a slow pace with frequent stops. It was neat to hear stories about how the park was created and the area around it. The person leading the tour had old photos of the park showing it before there were trees in it and when Yakima Avenue went right through the middle.
I will definitely do the next historical walk, which I think is in the brewery district. I think it would be worth the while to do the power walk option if lunchtime was your workout time.
