Walkable Fife?

Like summer this year, the economic turnaround may not have fully arrived, but we’re starting to see some fits and starts of developments that seem an awful lot like good signs.

For a while there (and still sometimes) it seemed like the only development-related news has been about one or another project getting postponed, getting downsized, or going under. And while that is still happening, we’ve seen a few things getting off the ground lately that make us a little more hopeful that the sun will be peeking through the clouds any day now.

Work has started up again at Point Ruston. The University Place Town Center project has a ground breaking. Parkland has plans for a mixed-use development near PLU. Not exactly a return to the boom days, but we’ll take it. And now we read that Fife has plans for a city center.

The City of Fife is beginning to create a plan for development over the next 20 to 30 years. The centerpiece of that plan is the formation of a proper city center around the 54th Street intersection with I-5. Imagine for a moment – a walkable downtown Fife with mixed use residential, commercial, and retail … what if they get there before Tacoma?

While this process is just beginning, it is exciting to see key stakeholders engaged in this process. Think about what this region can look like for our children. Fife, Tacoma and the Sovereign Puyallup Tribe need to come together for the benefit of us all and the next generation. We have more in common than some realize…This is exciting to be a part of!

I don’t see it happening. Just like UP, it’s a drive-thru kind of town.
