Want to bid on the Broadway LID?
After a surprising vote last year, the Broadway Local Improvement District (LID) was halted for awhile but eventually the process was put in motion to start it up again. There was a public hearing in October and it’s been pretty quiet since then.
The City has just put out the latest request for bids.

This is a project we’ve been paying a lot of attention to, as it affects so much of the redevelopment of the Theater District. The Winthrop, the Mecca, and the Elks Temple—three great and historic buildings—all fall within the Broadway LID.
The complete bid solicitation document, technical plans and drawings are available from Reprographics Northwest.

I don’t think those photos, as nasty-looking as they are, do justice to how awful this area really is. Walk on Commerce from Old City Hall to the Pantages and you’re dodging huge trash cans on the sidewalks, stepping over broken concrete, and walking by buildings that obviously couldn’t care less what they look like on the outside. The ruins hovering over the parking lot across the street from Old City Hall is just bizarre: ugly, unsafe, and looking like it’s designed to provide shelter for transients.
I guess this LID doesn’t cover Commerce, though?
