Washington-Hoyt Remodel - Public Input Sought
Among the many things we love about Tacoma are its historic public school buildings. Particularly when they’ve been renovated, and brought up to code. Both Lincoln and Stadium look amazing after their respective remodels.
Next up on the list of historic Tacoma public schools to get a remodel is Washington-Hoyt Elementary School in the North End. We read today in the Daily Index that the district is beginning the process of seeking public input on the renovation of Washington-Hoyt. The school opened in 1901, and has seen a number of changes throughout its history.
The school webpage notes that the building is not currently up to code for access for persons with disabilities. We’re assuming it’s a given that those issues will be addressed, but the question of how to do so in a historic building can present its own set of challenges. Other issues that will be addressed include improvements to safety in and around the school, and general “modernization” of the building. Historic Tacoma is encouraging community members to attend the scheduled public meeting, and share their input.

Washington Hoyt is so valuable but McKinley wasn’t? Same era, same building code problems. Totally different demographics. Kind of says it all. (For those who don’t know, Washington-Hoyt is seemingly sacrosanct and McKinley was closed last year.)
