Wayfinding for Tacoma's Gateways
We’ve talked about wayfinding before – most recently in connection with the Pacific Avenue Streetscape upgrades. This time the City is looking at what information drivers entering downtown Tacoma need to find their way.
They are looking for public feedback on visitor destinations in downtown Tacoma via an online survey. The survey asks you to identify the most likely destinations for visitors entering the city via 10 different routes. Destinations listed include UW Tacoma, the Tacoma Dome, Freighthouse Square, and the various museums and theaters, among others. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete.
So, what destinations are at the top of your list? Is anything missing from the survey?

Are these wayfinding signs something that the students in the trade schools could make for us cheap or is this another multi million dollar taxpayer hustle?

@fredo: Often times, when you are looking for a donation of a gift-in-kind (not cash but goods), it takes more paid labor to get said gift than the gift is worth.

Jess: I didn’t suggest a gift-in-kind. I suggested that a local trade school (like Bates or maybe a shop program at Mt. Tahoma) could make the signs. I’ve seen wayfinding signs and they are no big deal. I don’t know if you are aware of it but Tacoma is BROKE.

fredo: Can we just assume that any government spending from your point of view is a “taxpayer hustle”?

No. Spending for core services is acceptable. Wayfinding signs are not a core service. And besides that, in an era of cell phone applications aren’t wayfinding signs a little behind the times? I haven’t heard anybody trying to install hitching posts lately. .

I took the survey, and I notice that they didn’t include anything like food or gas stations. When I come to a town, I’m not necessarily looking for museums or theaters, but it’s often helpful to know which way to turn for the basics. Especially at an entrance like the Stadium Way exit, where it’s not immediately apparent.
And although most people now have smart phones, it’s helpful to have the signs for back up.
