Weekend Preview: all things female

Mother’s Day brings a weekend of female-inspired fun…

First on the list of Mom’s Day fun time can be found at Tacoma Musical Playhouse for its production of “Hello Dolly.” This classic musical tale follows the story of Dolly Levi (played by Diane Bozzo) and her loveable matchmaking art at the turn of the twentieth century. Based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which was later revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955, the story of a meddlesome widow who strives to bring romance to several couples and herself in the Big City. A winner of 10 Tony Awards including: Best Musical, Author, Composer, Lyricist and more; HELLO, DOLLY has become one of the most enduring musical theater hits of all time, enjoying three Broadway revivals, international success and the 1969 film nominated for seven Academy Awards. The show opens tonight and runs weekends through May 29.

For the hard-rocking momma set, there is an all-age show featuring Cody Foster Army, 12 Gauge Saint and 13 Scars at Louie G’s in Fife, right behind the Poodle Dog at 9 p.m. Saturday. 12 Gauge Saint features Donny Paycheck from ZEKE, 13 Scars features Tacoma legend Sean Durand from Portrait of Poverty.

Saturday is also National Free Comic Book Day and the 253’s landmark comic shop. Comic Book Ink is participating as always. Starting at 10 a.m., Comic Book Ink, near the Lakewood Regal off Interstate 5, will host its eighth annual celebration for folks who love comics and everything about them with discounts, freebies and events.

“We are also lucky to have a huge number of phenomenal new, and returning, guests to this year’s Free Comic Book Day,” owner John Munn said. “With members of the 501st Legion of Star Wars Recreationists,a chance to meet some of Tacoma’s Dockyard Derby Dames and characters from the Dead Gentlemen/Zombie Orpheous Film JourneyQuest.

For a mix of horses and fun, the New Frontier will be hosting a Kentucky Derby party starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Watch the “most exciting two minutes in sports” on the big screen, do a lil betting perhaps, and enjoy Mint Juleps, Champagne, and other fun specials. Any wearer of a fancy hat gets a free glass of bubbly.

Breastfest III takes over the Swiss Sunday night for Music Giving Back’s community celebration for a good cause, Diana Tilton McCasey’s climb Kilimanjaro to benefit Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Music will include The Missionary Position, Sea Jayne Trip, Radio Edit and The Stoned Evergreen Travelers. The event We also have a prize for the person who can most originally use the color “PINK” in an outfit for the night.

And for something a bit different for Mother’s Day, Tacoma Cult Film Club will hold “One of Us, One of Us: An Evening With Some Extraordinary People” at the Acme Grub Cage at 7 p.m. Sunday.

What mom needs another box of chocolates? Get her something she will remember – a bad horror movie, a mammary fest, a comic book or bleeding ears.
