Weekend Preview: clouds, sun and tunes

With the sun expected to make an appearance this weekend, outdoor activities will likely be the call of the wild. Just in case the clouds win out, there are a few things indoors that are worthy of getting out of the house.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is the feature at the Grand Cinema’s monthly Family Flick Series on Saturday. The free show starts at 10 a.m. The film is a movie version of the beloved children’s book that focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain and things go wrong.

Also on Saturday, Tacoma Art Place will be holding its Community Free Day. The event will include free looks at all the community art-making spot has to offer as well as a host of classes that range from felting to jewelry making to graphic design demonstrations. There are two photography classes taught by yours truly as well.

If music is your thing, Rafael Tranquilino Band will host an all-ages jam session starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stonegate Pizza. Tranquilino is a rocking guitarist with Eric Clapton hands and a Carlos Santana soul. The idea behind this event is to give the opportunity to all the youth musicians to play with professional musicians and get better in their playing.

Another musical concert of note is the Tacoma Youth Chorus “Spring Serenade with Guest Conductor, Henry Leck.” The select choirs will have two concerts Sunday at Lagerquist Hall, Pacific Lutheran University. The concert is part of the group’s 20th season celebration that will include commissioned works by several composers with connections to TYC, including Donna Schultz, Dan Davison, Judy Herrington and former director, Keith Loftis.

And with that, the weekend will end.

we need more daniel blue coverage. his king of diamonds song is the funniest thing ever. and the music video is soooo bad it’ll cheer you up. to be honest the only thing you can do about this thing called ‘tacoma’ is find the humor in it. then you’ll come around. just look at it through a parks and recreations filter. but yeah i know, i bet it’s been a long winter. i always run out just about now when living in WA. then the summer charges you up just in time for another cold and wet gloomy ass fucking. but that’s what alcohol is for right?? and after a few decades of that shit you’ll turn into a kathie lee gifford and find yourself applying to .gov job.

hey well if exit133 was motivated to cover DB things would be different. Fur coats and ‘normal’ people in slow motion.. man.

I’ve been waiting for the last City Council Meeting minutes… but lately this website has been about arts, only. I wouldn’t mind a little calendar-of-events on the side margin, but these perpetual articles don’t offer a lot of discussion-motivation unless you’re standing there in the gallery…

maybe you fellows didn’t notice, but this blog is on auto-pilot with a collision course directly into the sun. I checked, all the escape pods have been jettisoned. Audios Amigos! (leaps out air lock)

Which leads to the question if you have to jettison your escape pod and had to take one person or animal with you given the choice between Daniel Blue, a spitting cobra, Gary Busey, Michelle Bachmann, a rabid raccoon, or the guy who keeps annoyingly announcing the judgement day, who would you save? (Knowing it could take 3 weeks for rescue crews to find you.)
