Weekend Preview: extra days of fun… sort of
President’s Day weekend is here, but Friday is still a school day for Tacoma schools since it is a snow make-up day. Monday is still a sleep in day, so at least there is that bit of news. And you might need that jammy day after a full weekend of local family fun.
First on the family fun list is the Third Thursday Art Walk tonight, the night when all the museums and galleries open for free with special events and between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Broadway Center for the Performing Arts and Lakewood Playhouse are staging a joint production of “My Name is Asher Lev”, starting this weekend. The show is directed by Lakewood’s Marcus Walker and will have performances at both theaters during the full run. The story tells the tale of a young gifted artist torn between his Orthodox Jewish faith and his passion to paint the truth. The show plays at Tacoma’s Theatre on the Square this weekend and moves to Lakewood Feb. 25 through March 20.
Tacoma’s Grand Cinema will be having a free screening “Ghostbusters” for its monthly Click! Family Flick. The show starts at 10:30 a.m. Few things beat a comedy about ghost hunting before it was on television nine times a day on the Sci-Fi Network.
After ghost hunting on the big screen, jump back into the Way Back Machine for a “Tea with Mrs. Casey” at Historic Fort Steilacoom, a complex of four remaining historic buildings on the grounds of Western State Hospital. Re-enactors will portray Mrs. Casey, wife of the Fort Commander, Col. Casey, her daughters and friends from Steilacoom, Fort Nisqually and the Territory as it was in 1850s. Tea starts at 2 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $15. Reservations required by calling (253) 582-5838.
Sunday… well, I suppose you’re on your own that day, although I recommend brunch at the Harmon Hub for a breakfast pizza. And what President’s Day weekend would be complete without some time on Monday spent pondering the essence of presidentiality?
