Weekend Preview: grit and wonder

The sun and warmer weather means lots of things to lots of people. The night time crowd sees it as a time to bust out the short skirts, plunging necklines and ultra-tight jeans and booty shorts.

With that in mind, it only seems fitting that the Grit City will be staging one of the most decedent plays to take to the lime lights. Yes, “Cabaret” is playing in T-town’s Pantages Theater tonight. Set in Berlin’s Kit Kat Club during the rise of Nazi oppression, the play centers on the struggles of Sally Bowles, an aging and drug addicted dancer and an American tourist in search of a great novel. What they find together is their world of debauchery crashing to an end while the music plays on.
Based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood the show offers music by John Kander and dance moves inspired by the 1972 film by legendary dance guru Bob Fosse.

A more cultured crowd can be found at the Northwest Sinfonietta’s “Mozart’s Requiem” Saturday night at the Rialto. This musical giant is a must-see for music lovers.

Rounding out the offerings by the Broadway Center this weekend is the child-favorite, “Willy Wonka” at Theatre on the Square Saturday night. This adaptation of Roald Dahl’s timeless candy factory features the songs from the classic family film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” and is a good match for the recently release remake starring Johnny Depp.
