Weekend Preview: junky grooves and sandy shores

The forecast calls for yet another gloomy, overcast weekend outside, but the grooves inside will be more tropical than Northwest fare.

Ocean Grooves Donald Glaude at the Swiss, 1904 South Jefferson, tonight for a DJ concert of all things energetic groove.

Born in Tacoma, Glaude’s love for music began at an early age. Originally a student of classical music, he was well-versed in the upright bass and violin. Then came his love of George Clinton and Funkadelic. A new sound was born. His uncompromising DJ style and innovation show no sign of slowing down any time soon. With the credit of five full-length CDs and numerous remixes under his belt, he has focused much of his time to production work. Producing such dance floor hits as “Get Up” and “Soul Cha Cha”.

For flashback fun, Speakeasy is hosting Retrograde, a benefit party for the 6th annual Urban Arts Festival tonight. The theme is the 1950s and 1960s, with Battersea, Paris Spleen, Basemint, The Hotels and The Nightgowns on the band list. Tickets are $10 and doors open at 8 p.m.

And of course there is the eighth anniversary of Hell’s Kitchen all weekend. Tonight’s band list is anchored by SweetWater.

For some family fare with a tropical tone, Lakewood Playhouse’s Youth Theatre program will be staging “Treasure Island” at 7 p.m. today and tomorrow and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The show is followed by a performance of Highly Theatrical Terms, for a double bill of theater for just $5.

Oh the fun you could have.
