Weekend Preview: Mother’s Day part deux

History will remember that this is the weekend Desmond Tutu came to town. He will be talking at the “Be the Spark” rally hosted by The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation as a way to inspire individuals to take action and make their community a more positive, caring place to live. Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, will be making one of his last public appearances before going into retirement after a lifetime of humanitarian and human rights work, particularly in South Africa. Also in the bill will be Craig Kielburger, Canadian activist and founder of Free The Children; and Quest Crew, Season 3 winner of America’s Best Dance Crew.

On the runway side of the city’s nightlife is the Fashion Night Out Tacoma. This gathering will be the “fashion event of the night” Friday with a show at 746 Broadway that will include an evening filled with fashion, couture and entertainment. Taylor Couture has pulled together local designers and boutique owners for a glimpse at the world of fashion. Tickets are $30 and available online.

On the benefit side of the roster, The Run Like a Girl! 5k Run/Walk will take over Chambers Bay Golf Course Saturday morning as a way to poke fun at gender stereotypes and benefit the YWCA Pierce County’s life-changing domestic violence prevention and intervention programs while taking a jog around the scenic landscape. The $25 registration can be made online.

And the sun might even be out this weekend. Good times. Good times.
