Weekend preview: movies, motion and music


The forecast calls for rain this weekend, but there will be sunny-time fun inside at spots around the City of Destiny.

The Sister Cities International Film Festival continues its line up of award-winning films and cultural programs from the 10 different countries that have “sister city” relationships with Tacoma. Tonight’s offering is “Christmas In August,” from South Korea. This movie is all about the subtleness of what is not spoken in the tradition of an English period piece like a Korean version of “Pride and Prejudice.” Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Blue Mouse, the Pacific NW Shop, or online. The movie starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Blue Mouse Theatre, at 26th Street and Proctor, Tacoma.

For inside entertainment a bit more active, out and abouters can check out “The Wedding Singer,” a: musical comedy set in 1985. The hit movie by the same name became a Broadway hit and is not being staged by theaters around the country. The show runs at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Tacoma Musical Playhouse , 7108 Sixth Ave.

One of the anchor acts of the weekend will be Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a Grammy Award -winning vocal group from South Africa that will be playing at the Pantages Theater . Brought the wider world by Paul Simon’s “Graceland” album more than a decade ago, the group is known for its harmonizing and tight musical timing. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

For some out-of-town fun, there is Lakewood Playhouse’s staging of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera “HMS Pinafore.” The show opens its five-week Friday. This is a show that brings quick witted lyrics and a fun storyline fit for the whole family. The show runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Directed by Jim Brown of Pacific Lutheran University’s School of Music, music direction by Chris McAvoy and choreography by Nicole Lockett, the show is the musical of Lakewood’s season. The theater is located at 5729 Lakewood Towne Center Blvd.
