Weekend Preview: the day time forgot

The City of Destiny gets all gussied up tomorrow night to ring in the New Year.

Tacoma’s First Night celebration is on like Donkey Kong this weekend. But there are just too many shows to see, so some planning might be in order. The no-booze, family-friendly bash downtown covers 13 stages along Broadway that range from blues and folk to performance and uncategorizable artsy stuff.

One stage of local acts will be the Speakeasy Loves Mad Hat Stage, an outdoor stage between Broadway and Commerce. Standout performances slated for that stage are : the TOKENS improve group at 7:10 p.m. and Voxxy Vallejo at 10 p.m.

For something a bit more adult, Firwood Rock Lounge and the Surreal Ultra Lounge are holding a block party of sorts hosted by Dirty Harry from Kube 93 FM. “Worlds Collide” starts at 8 p.m. with a hosted cocktail reception and giveaways. The night will continue with three dance floors, a beer garden and five DJs.

With all the people around downtown and all the bars hosting events, it only makes sense that Hotel Murano has New Year’s Eve discounts and few vacancies.

Make no mistake, there are a lot of other adult offerings at First Night. The Variety show at TOTS, the Urban stage at Studio 2, the Dance stage at Studio 1, and the show at the Rialto are all definitely adult fare. Featured acts include Baby Gramps, Gods Favorite Beefcake, The Halyards, Uncle Bonsai, Pearl Django, Mud Bay Jugglers, Jockomo, Rumbeggae…the list goes on. In addition people wll have a chance to play in the fire garden with Zen Fire garden pits, fire & ice sculptures, a Tiger effigy, the Museum of Glass Hot shop…it a whole lot of stuff. Just in case, you’re wondering, this is not a wimpy show.

@woo-hoo! I used to be totally put off by the “family friendly” first night.

I’ve since learned the art of bar hoping from 1st night regulars. Beers at Harmon, cocktails at Varsity, and shots at Hells. I’m going!

Not only are there so many GREAT acts (local and international), but looking just like the old photos, the whole scene of downtown Tacoma full of people enjoying themselves and things to do comes…well, maybe once year. And that is only as long as people support this event. First Night is run on a lean budget, but I’m sure the expenses are significant. People work all year to present this, and all we have to do is decide to go. Come on, Tacoma, buy your buttons. This is a good thing that most cities don’ t have. The more we support it, the better it will get. If we don’t turn out, it will surely go away again. Thanks again First Night, and your many volunteers.

I love First Night! Getting to see inside the Pythian temple alone is worth the price of the button. Not to mention how many different way you can play with fire!

@3 – I’m operating on a tight budget too. I’m pretty sure everyone is. It was a great time and well worth supporting. I spent $24.00 that I didn’t need to to see 2 acts on the mainstage. Alice Stewart and Rumbeggae were worth the money! We had a great time.

Next year we’ll plan better. I would have liked to see the Tune Stranglers.
