Weekend Recap for Dec 7th, 2009
This was a weekend of music, eclectic, funky, holiday and heart-warming music.
First out of the chute was the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra’s holiday “Sounds of the Season,” with the Tacoma Symphony Chorus and the Tacoma Youth Chorus filling out the bill with the angelicly voiced Amy Mahoney doing her soprano thing. Wow, that Pantages concert would have made Scrooge convert, which is ironic since Iggy Scrooge was playing at the Theater on the Square this weekend as well.

Anyway, conductor Harvey Felder truly is one of the great icons of Tacoma that makes the city cool. He is soooooo Tacoma with his conducting style. He is professional and all tuxed up, but he sure knows how to have fun with the crowd by spinning in uber witty banter and personal stories. Gosh, I love the symphony.
While the symphony is done for the year, there is still one last chance to hear the Tacoma Symphony Chorus do its thing. The professional singers will be doing the full Messiah set with Geoffrey Boers as conductor at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 18 at St Charles Borromeo Church.
The holiday concert was over by 10, so that left time to get in a few more sets of Tacoma music. That prompted a trip to Jazzbones to see Warner House Cat and Motopony, Daniel Blue’s latest creation. Both bands clearly had fun and that energy translated to the crowds, albeit well buzzed, having fun as well.

There is a reason that Motopony is being billed as the best band to come out of Tacoma sense the Ventures. And that reason isn’t all hype. The band decidedly doesn’t suck.

Does Harvey Felder even live in Tacoma? Or does he just fly in on his baton for performances?
