Weekend review: Going green to keep the green

It was an interesting day in political science.

On the darkside of politics, Tacoma Little Theatre continued its run of “Frost Nixon.” This retelling of the landmark interview between a British talk show host (played by James Gilletti) and the defamed Richard Nixon (Steve Tarry) following his resignation from the presidency of the United States is one everyone of voting age should give a look. This was the interview of the decade in the 1970s because it brought the newspaper headlines of Watergate and abuse of presidential powers to their living rooms. The effects of the Watergate scandal and the interview that summarized Nixon’s view of being Commander in Chief and the leader of the free world continue to shape politics today. The show runs weekends through Feb. 6.

On a lighter note, the day-long conversation about sustainability and the benefits of shopping locally and operating a business with an eye on the environment yesterday at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center was a spark of pride for those who love the 253. The Business Examiner’s BEGreenSouthSound.com as well as Pecha Kucha Vol. 9, and TacomaShiftHappens speakers and resources for all things green. Mayor Marilyn Strickland delivered the first “State of the City Address” and gave a boost to civic pride in the efforts to continue to improve the city’s quality of life and fatten its wallets.

If only government worked more like the latter and less like the former.
