Weekend Review: gold digging

Sometimes it is a good thing when your weekend doesn’t go as planned. This weekend was one of those times.

With kids in tow, I set out to indulge in my new hobby, geocaching, courtesy of my new smart phone.

Anyone not in the know geocaching is the modern version of the old compass-and-map orienteering Boy Scouts around the world did back in the day before GPS. The concept is simple: go to the Web site or download the free app and scroll to a cache in the area.

We ventured to Fort Steilacoom Park, for example, and followed the map to a hidden treasure of McDonald’s Happy Meal toys and a travel log. More than a dozen similar caches of goodies dot the park, and hundreds of sites can be found in the City of Destiny. Some are located in public parks and easy to find, while others require some trekking through forested areas and some code deciphering. But it is all in good fun.

And it is all free.

Geocaching is a really fun excuse to get outside and hike around local parks when it’s nice out. It’s like urban treasure hunting!

My friends and I went this weekend too. We found a few, and then almost gave up on particularly elusive one in Point Defiance Park. Right when we were getting ready to leave, I kicked a log in frustration and it ended up being the hiding place.
