Weekend review: music and karma collide
This weekend was one for the record books … even with the rain.
First on the shows-not-to-miss list were the Basic Radio show at Hell’s Kitchen and Dignitaries at the New Frontier. Basic Radio is just fun rock music, while the Dignitaries showed why this band is well on its way from hatching from the music incubator that is this Tacoma venue to bigger and better things. Its high-energy mix of classic rock bass lines, old-school punk guitar riffs and thunder vocals by Reylan Tubig Fernandez never disappoint.
Then came the Si Si Si, the F—-ing Eagles and Girl Trouble opening of HOTROD-ARAMA car show at the Swiss. Sweaty leather jackets rubbed and grinded against hot pants and skin tight V-neck shirts to these rocking local legends.
There were also cars. … Lots and lots of cars. Alongside those pre-1965 cars were car-related vendors, pinups, roller derby gals and an endless roster of music. On the Saturday bill was: ’63 Burnout, Marshall Scott Warner, Basemint, The Scuzztones, Johnny Cheeseburger and the Cum Bunnies, Bentz Brothers and Stafford and Marti Brom.

Sunday brought Radio8Ball at Speakeasy Arts Cooperative as a first try of what might become a monthly gig for the venue. Anchoring this show was Tacoma-transplant songwriter Jerin Falkner.
She is an amazing songwriter, whose lyrics did the trick of channeling the gods of fate for the questions at hand. She is well worth a look and listen, and the show should be on your list of things to experience.

Bigger than the New Frontier? Sure. Better? Can you name a better place to see music? I’m not sure I can – certainly not in Puget Sound City.

Ewwwww… did we really have to read this description? “Sweaty leather jackets rubbed and grinded against hot paints and skin tight V-neck shirts…” (I think you meant hotpants, but even so we only needed to read about the music, please, not the audience’s tacky dress (as much as it seems to turn you on). Also saying, “She is well worth a look…” should have been either “a look into” or “a listen to”. If we’re going to try to brag about Tacoma’s good-looks, we will surely lose.

Ummm… did you forget to mention the fact that there were three nationally touring bands playing at The Peabody Waldorf? It was an amazing show produced by The Warehouse. Too bad you missed that… One of my favorite Tacoma music events yet. I am sure there will be more to come too. Thanks Warehouse and Peabody for keeping things real and continuing to amaze me.

So what you are saying is Tacoma bands are premature little crack smoking zygotes the rest of the time? And that pulling the rent check tubes out of their little flailing chests and sending them to their deaths on the interstates outside of Washington is a good thing? I think the false bravado approach to eluding fame a much better banner to rock under in Tacoma. At least you’ll sleep a lot easier knowing the bands won’t die of SID in a Hollywood Motel 6. Let the fking world come to Tacoma and spend money if they want good music.
