Weekend Review: suffrage sounds bad, but is really good

It seems sort of odd to think, but it has only been 100 years since women gained the right to vote. Washington can be proud that the Evergreen state was a leader in the cause. That fact was celebrated this weekend at events around the South Sound.

I happened to go to the American Association of University Women event at the Capitol Museum Sunday, so I could see women in petty coats and broaches and learn about our heritage.

Those in the know are well aware that I am a history geek and a reenctor, so it was fun to be surrounded by living history as women live out the roles of some of the nation’s suffrage leaders. Emma Smith DeVoe, May Arkwright Hutton and Laura Hall Peters were all there. South Sound actresses played the parts, most notably was Annie Coleman of Tacoma.

Read more about the suffrage movement in Shanna Stevenson’s article The Fight for Women’s Suffrage: A Brief History or see pics of the event on Facebook.

Any chance Daniel Blue will be coming back soon? “Suffrage sounds bad but it is really good” “It seems sort of odd to think, but it has only been 100 years since women gained the right to vote. Where did the time go”. Daniel come back. All is forgiven. I guess this is better than “playing hide the communion wafer”.

Is that the ultra-attractive actress Annie Coleman in the period costume in the photo above by chance?
