Weekend Review: Tutu keynotes ‘Spark event’
Imagine how the 253 would improve if 14,000 people gathered to pledge an oath to “Be a Spark” to better their community through volunteerism and activism.
Well, that’s what happened this weekend. Retired Archbishop and life-long human rights activist Desmond Tutu came to town to keynote the “Be the Spark” rally hosted by The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation at the Tacoma Dome Friday. The gathering of community boosters and area youth was designed to inspire individuals to take action and make their community a more positive, caring place to live. “Be the Spark” efforts are now springing up around the area and “on social media sites”: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_217181128311430&ap=1 to keep the effort going now that the pep rally is over.
Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, was making one of his last public appearances before going into retirement from public life after a lifetime of humanitarian and human rights work, particularly in South Africa. Also in the bill were Craig Kielburger, Canadian activist and founder of Free The Children; and Quest Crew, Season 3 winner of America’s Best Dance Crew and a welcome from the Puyallup Tribe of Nations.
The evening did not disappoint. And now the work begins.
