What Happened to Cascade Land Conservancy?

The land conservation, stewardship and community building organization hasn’t gone anywhere, but Cascade Land Conservancy is changing its name to Forterra.

As a nod to expansion in recent years beyond the Cascades and into urban areas, the organization feels that “Cascade” and “Land Conservancy” no longer fully represent the scope of their work. Here’s some of what CLC/Forterra has to say about the rebranding:

As an invented name, it is an open vessel that will allow us to continue to adapt to the needs of the community and effectively advance our mission. It is geographically neutral in both the urban and rural environments as well as across the regions.

For more on the rebranding and on the good work CLC Forterra does, visit www.cascadeland.org

We’ve gotten to know the Cascade Land Conservancy name, and this seems like a significant change in branding, but it’s good to know that they’re going to be keeping up the good work they do, whatever they’re called.

Speaking of changes in branding (“no comment” on CLC’s new name), the new improved Exit 133 should consider a new tagline — don’t you think “In Tacoma by Choice” is a bit defensive? Shouldn’t we assume that people don’t think we’re trapped here?

All true Tacoman’s are born with a chip on their shoulder. I happen to like Exit 133’s tagline. The new name for CLC does seem awfully obscure. Maybe people will eventually figure out what Forterra is, but I doubt it

Forterra sounds like a coffee or mining company.

Japanese car maker Toyota made up a name for one of its cars: Celica.

Between Celica and Fort&rra, the Japanese can distinguish an A and the Latin derived Ampersand.

Hmmm I get it now. Forterra would be making a word outta for, as in in favor of; and terra, is in earth. Therefore, Forterra means for the earth. If Sarah Palin can make up nonsense words, why can’t treehuggers?

Oh this so confusing…I meant C&lica.
