Wintergrass 2009 Starts Today!

The always amazing, continually entertaining Wintergrass starts today and runs through Sunday. What is Wintergrass you say? Why it’s Bluegrass music at its best! Venues include several spaces at the Hotel Murano, as well as Urban Grace Church, Varsity Grill and the Rialto Theater. You can enjoy 200 musicians, 30 bands, on 6 stages as well as endless jamming coming from practically every corner in between. It’s 4 days and nights of tremendous energy and fun.
Wintergrass is the one time every year when many of our Seattle friends actually travel down I-5 and come into downtown Tacoma. It’s worth it for them. Yet, so many of our Tacoma friends have never seen the festivities. Don’t let another year slip by. Come on down and check it out.

Say no more….right in the midst of “economic collapse” along comes the Wintergrass Team who gift us all with this incredible event! Thank you, Steve,Patrice and Erla for the hundreds of hours to create this event and share the music friends with TACOMA again this year.
PLUS, we get to show off the all new Hotel Murano which just happens to be listed #1 on Trip Advisor all across the universe to the traveling public. Not bad /Hats off !! Jam ON !!

Seems like Tacoma is starting to appreciate the Wintergrass festival a little more, even if the Tacoma Weekly’s preview this week mislabels bluegrass as “blues.”
Anyway, between the festival’s line-up this year and new venues like the New Frontier and the Den (as well as some good bookings at the Java Jive), things are looking up for the local music scene. Now if only the Broadway Center could book Neko Case to play here on her upcoming tour…

Everyone must go. Even if you’re not sure if you like bluegrass, it’s great to see musicians and fans from all over the world converge on Tacoma to share this music. (And there’s a lot of crossover music genres, too.) Buy a ticket, or just hang out at the Murano and catch the impromptu jamming in every corner (I hope they’re still allowed to do that this year now that it’s the Murano). Seeing friends and strangers alike creating this music will lift your spirits.

Another fantastic Wintergrass, Patrice, Erla, Lew, Connie, Lola, John, etc.! Still in a fog and just starting to catch up on sleep now. I took in a string workshop and I’m now a fan of the band Hot Buttered Rum. Then I was totally blown away by (Kendel and) The Paperboys – especially their version of All along the Watchtower, both groups performing at the Varsity. Thanks to the Murano for letting the ground-floor jamming happen until late, and at 3:00 a.m. gently ushering the stubborn last ones out with a smile. I didn’t see anyone riding the horse-lamp this year. Thanks to the Marriott for letting the jam continue all night in the lobby. I’ve got a year of woodshedding to do. Dang whippersnappers are way too good.
