Work Update for the BLID

If you’re like us, driving through downtown Tacoma has gotten … spotty. It seems like everywhere you turn (or try to turn) there’s construction.

So here’s a handy update from the City on what’s going on with the Broadway Local Improvement District. Now, when you find a road closed, you can know exactly what they’re doing to it.

Market Street & St Helens:

  • If weather permits, concrete curbs will continue to be poured on both Market & St. Helens.
  • Crews will be sub grading roadway in preparation for paving.
  • Then the contractor will pave Market St. and will come around the corner to pave the north end of St. Helens.
  • Once paved, the street will be striped, crosswalks will be marked and landscaping will start (including ledger square).
  • Joint utility trench work will continue at the intersection of St. Helens & 7th.

Broadway:

  • Crews will commence pouring sidewalks and driveways between 2nd and 4th.
  • Then Broadway will be paved from 2nd to 4th.
  • Then roadway grading will start.

All the work is weather-dependent, but so far the project is proceeding on schedule. We are very excited to see the final results.

Any word on when 4th street is going to be finished?

A bit of a tangent here, but I think a worthwhile one.

I’ve been mulling over light rail lately after a recent drive through Rainier Valley recently, and, of course, pending the vote on Tuesday next.

I think that particular route works, perhaps all the more so for what it does for cars – here’s some Pic’s from my blog.

The question for Tacoma is on what sorts of streets would an expansion of link work? Would it perhaps be best to think about the Link route as the speedy arterial way to get through Tacoma, in addition to 705?

Two more questions, on the subject –

Will we see traffic light coordination in Downtown if Eyman’s 985 passes?

If Sound Transit’s Prop. 1 fails, will Pierce County go it alone, under whichever candidate shows us the leadership?

At least some progress is being made.

BTW, I almost forgot about this Tacomic when the Broadway LID initially failed to pass city hall:

I walked the Broadway LID project last night. It’s coming along nicely and I like the personality of the roads and curbs. You can see it won’t be just some straight streets.
Can we hire these guys permanently to just go through downtown one project area after another? Things are looking like they’ll really be nice when those guys are done.
