Bates Technical College again named a military-friendly school

Bates is among the top schools in the nation dedicated to doing the most for military service members, veterans and their dependents.
TACOMA, Wash. – Bates Technical College recently earned a “Military Friendly School” designation in the 2016 Victory Media Military Friendly® Schools List for the fourth consecutive year. The annual list honors the higher education institutions with services, programs and more that are designed to help ensure the success of America’s service members, veterans and spouses as students.
Bates has an active student veteran club, whose members make it possible for the college to offer two student veteran centers. In addition to offering valuable resources and assistance, the centers serve as a gathering space for veterans, military members, spouses and their dependents.
College President Dr. Ron Langrell said this recognition helps reinforce our commitment and dedication to the hundreds of veteran students who choose Bates as their educational partner after serving in the military. “As a community-based technical college with a major military base as partners, we make it a priority to help our veterans become career-ready and build on the skills and abilities acquired during their military service.”
This year’s lists highlight more than 1,400 Military Friendly® Schools and 220 Military Friendly® Employers exhibiting best practices in support of military students and employees, respectively. Institutions of higher learning competed for the title by completing an extensive survey covering ten indicators of success, including:
- Support for student veterans on campus,
- Graduation and employment outcomes, and
- Military spouse policies.
Companies were surveyed about key programs and policies, such as:
- The strength of military recruiting efforts,
- Percentage of new hires with prior military service
- Retention programs for veterans, and
- Policies on National Guard and Reserve service.
