Bates Technical College’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration includes performance & community march

TACOMA, Wash. – A Living Voices performance will serve as the featured entertainment at Bates Technical College’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the college’s South Campus Auditorium, 2201 S. 78th Street in Tacoma.

The performance, titled “The Right to Dream,” follows a young African American student growing up in small-town Mississippi, where the American Civil Rights movement is on the horizon. Audience members will watch as the animated performer brings life to civil rights-era issues.

The celebration continues on Monday, Jan. 19 when community members are invited to participate in the annual March for MLK.

Marchers meet at 8 a.m. for refreshments at the college’s Downtown Campus cafeteria on 11th Street and Yakima Avenue. At 9 a.m., the group begins marching to the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration, held at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. A shuttle will be available to return marchers to the Downtown Campus after the city’s celebration at 1 p.m.
