Celebrating Imagination: Live Demonstrations Kick Off Upcoming Kids Design Glass Too Exhibition

January 17-18, 2015

Tacoma, Wash. — In celebration of the new exhibition Kids Design Glass Too, the Museum of Glass Hot Shop Team will be creating two new pieces for the ongoing Kids Design Glass™ program. The two pieces will be made from selected designs by local children and will be blown in the Hot Shop the weekend of January 17-18. In connection to the new exhibition, the demonstrations will provide live insight into the process of how the exhibition pieces were created.

The two selected drawings are Paws, designed by Gavin Williams (age 9), and Campy, designed by Lucy Clark (age 6). While the Hot Shop Team breathes life into these new creatures, Williams and Clark will be in attendance for direction and input on the pieces
while they are being made.

The Museum’s ongoing Kids Design Glass™ (KDG) program began in 2004, encouraging children ages 12 and under to submit whimsical
drawings. The MOG Hot Shop Team selects one design approximately once per month, transforming it into a glass sculpture with the help of the young designer’s input. Following the popular 2009-2011 Kids Design Glass exhibition at MOG, this sequential display of 28 Kids Design Glass sculptures created in the Hot Shop over the last four years will offer visitors another chance to experience a fun, creative, and youthful genre of glass art that draws directly from the uninhibited imaginations of children, who come from many different backgrounds.

“The pieces the children design are unique. The designs and accompanying text come to life in characters such as Mustache Man, Pig in a Blanket, and Lock-ness-pig. Each artwork captures the intriguingly imaginative capacity of children’s minds. For many children the experience is transformative, validating their artistic journey.” notes Bonnie Wright, Curator of Education and Community Engagement at Museum of Glass.

The creation of these two new pieces will present a unique opportunity for visitors to get a broader perspective on the opening Kids Design Glass Too exhibition. The fun and creative atmosphere will be perfect for families to attend and is anticipated to ignite imagination and awe in participating visitors.

Museum of Glass is sponsored in part by The Ben B. Cheney Foundation, City of Tacoma Arts Commission, ArtsFund, The Dimmer Family Foundation, and The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.
