City of Tacoma Observes Christmas Day Dec. 25 and New Year's Day Jan. 1

Administrative offices in the Tacoma Municipal Building complex (747 Market St. and 733 Market St.) and in other City of Tacoma facilities will close Wednesday, Dec. 25, in observance of Christmas Day, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day. 

The City's landfill, recycling center and household hazardous waste facility (3510 S. Mullen St.) will be closed all day on Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1. Tacoma residents and businesses in Tacoma may dispose of undecorated and unflocked Christmas trees for free by bringing them to the Tacoma Landfill between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, through Tuesday, Dec. 31, and Thursday, Jan. 2, through Monday, Jan. 20. 

Customers whose regular collection day falls on Monday, Dec. 23, Tuesday, Dec. 24, Monday, Dec. 30, or Tuesday, Dec. 31, will remain on a normal pickup schedule. There will be no pickups on Wednesday, Dec. 25, or Wednesday, Jan. 1. Those whose regular collection day falls on Wednesday, Dec. 25, Thursday, Dec. 26, Friday, Dec. 27, Wednesday, Jan. 1, Thursday, Jan. 2, or Friday, Jan. 3, will have their pickups one day later. The City will only collect undecorated and unflocked Christmas trees that have been cut and placed inside brown yard waste containers with lids closed flat. Decorated or flocked Christmas trees cannot be recycled and must go in the garbage, and Christmas trees left next to containers will not be collected. Customers with specific questions about Christmas tree recycling may call 3-1-1 or (253) 591-5543.

Police and fire personnel will be on duty Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, and animal control personnel will be on duty from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. on each of those days.   

Following is a list of other closures and service adjustments relating to the upcoming holidays:
 

  • The EnviroHouse (3510 S. Mullen St.) will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 25, and reopen Thursday, Jan. 2, at 10 a.m. 
  • The Senior Centers (415 S. 13th St. and 5016 A St.) will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1.  
  • All Tacoma Public Library locations will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25. On Tuesday, Dec. 31, the main library (1102 Tacoma Ave. S) will open at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., while all branch libraries will open at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. All Tacoma Public Library locations will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
  • The Tacoma Municipal Court (930 Tacoma Ave. S) will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1.
  • There will be no parking enforcement by City staff on Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1.
