City of Tacoma Observes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday on Jan. 18

Administrative offices in the Tacoma Municipal Building complex (747 Market St. and 733 Market St.) and in other City of Tacoma facilities will close Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. 

The Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center (3510 S. Mullen St.) will be open as normally scheduled, from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., and customer pickups will not be affected. Information specific to a customer’s address can be found at tacomarecycles.org/collectioncalendar. 

Police and fire personnel will be on duty as normally scheduled, with animal control personnel on duty from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.   

Following is a list of other closures and service adjustments relating to the upcoming holidays:

  • The Beacon Senior Center (415 S. 13th St.) and Lighthouse Senior Center (5016 A St.) will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18. 
  • The Cold Weather Young Adult Shelter (located within the Beacon Senior Center, 415 S. 13th St.) will notclose and operate as normally scheduled. The shelter is in operation seven days a week from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. through March 31, 2016 to provide young adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness a safer alternative to urban camping.
  • All Tacoma Public Library locations will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 16. 
  • The Tacoma Municipal Court (930 Tacoma Ave. S) will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18.
  • The EnviroHouse (3510 S. Mullen St.) will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18. 
  • There will be no parking enforcement by City staff on Monday, Jan. 18. 

The City of Tacoma’s signature event, the 28th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration, will take place at 11 a.m. in the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center (1500 Broadway).
