City of Tacoma to Host Pre-Feasibility Visit Assessing Development of an Artist Live/Work Community

Tacoma, WA: The City of Tacoma and The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation have invited Artspace, America’s leading nonprofit developer for the arts, to Tacoma for a pre-feasibility visit. Artspace’s mission is to create, foster and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations.

Artspace will lead two days of tours, focus groups and meetings focused on assessing the feasibility of developing an artist live/work community in Tacoma.  The visit will take place on May 9th and 10th, 2013.

The public is warmly invited to attend the public meeting to find out more about Artspace and the potential for arts development in Tacoma.  The public meeting will be held at 7PM on May 9, 2013 at Tacoma’s City Hall in Room 16. (738 St. Helens, Tacoma, WA).

“Artists live/work spaces can be catalytic. Not only do they provide affordable housing opportunities for our creative class, they become centers for innovation and synergy often transforming neighborhoods and maintaining the heartbeat of community,” states Amy McBride, Tacoma Arts Administrator.  “We are excited to engage in this conversation to identify what is possible and move this dream closer to reality.”

Funding for the visit is provided by a grant from Chase Bank, one of the oldest financial institutions in the United States.  The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, who works to improve the quality of life in Pierce County by encouraging personal philanthropy, is also a partner.
