Cliff Mass Presentation on Evolution of Weather Forecasting -- A Benefit for Save KPLU

(Seattle-Tacoma, WA) KPLU's weather expert and University of Washington Professor of Atmospheric Sciences Cliff Mass is one of the Save KPLU campaign's most fervent advocates.  Mass will present a program on the evolution of weather forecasting at UW Kane Hall (Room 130) on March 16 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. with proceeds benefiting Save KPLU.

Weather prediction is perhaps humanity's most ancient science and is arguably our most complex technological achievement.  Even during periods of great tension, weather forecasting is one of the few activities  marked by cooperation rather than competition. This talk will describe the evolution of weather prediction from ancient times to the present, outlining the transition of weather forecasting from a subjective art to a rigorous application of physics that applies the most powerful computers on the planet, networks of satellites, radars and complex observing systems, and simulation models involving millions of lines of code.  The talk will end by explaining how the technology of weather prediction is being extended to provide insights into the impacts of global warming.

The event will be introduced by KPLU Environment Reporter Bellamy Pailthorp, who'll also moderate a Q&A with Cliff following his presentation.  General admission and VIP tickets are now on sale at savekplu.brownpapertickets.com.

About the Save KPLU Campaign

Save KPLU needs to raise $7 million in six months to match the amount of the current offer stated in the letter of intent outlining Pacific Lutheran University’s sale of KPLU to the University of Washington.  To date, Save KPLU has raised nearly $1.5 million toward that goal.  Donations to the Save KPLU campaign will ensure the survival of an independent, local newsroom, hand-picked and professionally curated jazz and blues, and a continuing commitment to local music education.  KPLU is planning a vast array of fundraising events throughout the Puget Sound area including ticketed events and meetings to encourage community conversations around the campaign and the future of 88.5.  Members of the community are also planning their own fundraisers.  More information on Save KPLU fundraising events is available on the KPLU Calendar.
