Democratic Presidential Nomination Up for Grabs As Pierce County Democrats Caucus on Saturday
Tacoma – On Saturday, March 26, 2016, at 10:00 a.m., the national contest to determine whether Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders will be the Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nominee rolls into Washington State and Pierce County. With the race still very much up in the air, Pierce County residents can help pick that nominee by attending their neighborhood precinct caucus. Because only caucus results, not the results of the May primary election, will award delegates to either Sanders or Clinton, voters must attend a caucus to support their preferred candidate.
Local Democratic Party leaders are planning for a big turnout of excited voters, as both the Clinton and Sanders campaigns have been actively organizing to boost turn-out among their supporters. “To make sure each location has enough room, we have reserved meeting places all over our district,” said Ed Herde, Chair of the 25th Legislative District Democrats. Another local leader, 28th Legislative District Democrats Chair Patti Dailey, emphasized that “because Democrats want everyone to be able to participate, no fee is required to take part.”
Anyone who is registered to vote and who publicly declares a preference for the Democratic Party on Caucus Day can participate. People who have not yet registered to vote can still participate by completing a simple voter registration form at their caucus. 17 year olds who will be 18 on Election Day, November 8, 2016, may also participate. All caucuses start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
At each caucus, local Democrats will declare their preference for Senator Sanders, Secretary Clinton, or for “uncommitted.” Delegate positions are allotted based on the support each candidate receives. Supporters of each candidate then elect people from their precinct to fill each delegate slot allotted to that candidate. Elected delegates are pledged to support the candidate (or the “uncommitted” position) supported by the voters who elected them.
Caucuses will be held in public spaces all over Pierce County. Each caucus location will host several precinct caucuses, but each precinct’s voters will meet separately. Pierce County Democrats Chair Linda Isenson praised local Democratic volunteer leaders for arranging caucus locations “from Eatonville to Key Center, from Lakewood to Bonney Lake, from Puyallup to Tacoma, and in every other community in Pierce County.” A full list of Pierce County caucus locations can be found at the Pierce County Democrats website (PierceCountyDems.org), under the “Elections” tab.
Kathy Orlando, 27th Legislative District Democrats Chair, encouraged Pierce County residents “to come to your caucus to meet your neighbors and decide for yourselves what issues are important in your neighborhood and community.” George Robison, Chair of the 26th Legislative District Democrats added that “the Democratic Party doesn’t belong to elected officials or party bosses; it belongs to individual Democratic voters. We want all of those voters to attend their local caucuses because we can’t know what is important to the Democratic Party until we learn what matters to the Democrats who live in each precinct.”
Voters must attend the caucus for their precinct. “It’s even easier to caucus this year, because participants can pre-register and find their caucus location at the Washington State Democratic Party website, WA-Democrats.org,” explained Mark Boswell, Chair of the 31st Legislative District Democrats; “we are encouraging everyone to pre-register to make check-in faster and easier on caucus day.” In addition, voter registration cards identify each voter’s precinct. And voters can also find their precinct by visiting the “My Vote” section of the Washington State Secretary of State website or by following the link for “Info by Address” in the Elections section of the Pierce County Auditor’s website.
