What’s the story behind that old photo found in a drawer? What can vernacular photographs tell us about the personal and social history of America? Will viewers see a 50-year-old print differently after an artist spins it into something fresh? Local artists work with “found photos” in a new show that opens with the start of Winter Quarter.
Some artists create paintings or sculptures inspired by vintage photos. Others mix images with other artifacts -- framing a vintage photo in an old sardine tin, for instance, or pasting images on a dressmaker’s pattern. Some artists take on social issues; others take the opportunity to explore family history.
Members of the public are invited to participate. Bring “found photos” to The Gallery for inclusion in a mural that will be completed over the course of the exhibit.
