Indiana Bones and the Golden Treasure

It’s adventurous. It’s exciting. It’s rip-roaring, action hero, movie theater-style fun.

If you looked up “Indiana Bones and the Golden Treasure” in the dictionary, the definition would be all that and more.

Much, much more.

The all-new Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater show features a cast of over a dozen live animals, some very accomplished zookeepers-turned-actors and one amazing dog.

Oh, and there’s a whole planeload of special effects punctuated with a fun musical score.

And treasure! Did we mention treasure? Hidden treasure? Yep. There’s that, too.

“Indiana Bones” showcases some of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s most interesting animals, all employed in an outdoor geocaching hunt.

There’s the clever raven, who uses a tool to uncover a cache; the snuffling aardvark with a long tongue that’s no match for some hidden objects; the striped skunk that emerges from a hidden compartment; the playful African serval; the slow-but-steady radiated tortoise; high-flying birds; a frog-bashing red-legged seriema; a low-hanging two-toed sloth; a ladder-climbing coati; Indian runner ducks; rats; and numerous other animal actors.

They – along with Dr. Indiana Bones (also known as Herald the dog) – help uncover the Golden Treasure during the 30-minute show, which appeals to Zoo visitors of all ages.

The actors fight their way through dynamite special effects (think simulated explosions!). Dr. Bones flies an airplane high overhead. (Yep. A dog does fly.) And the heroic team overcomes a clever rival.

There are nuggets of information about each animal built into the script, too.

“Indiana Bones and the Golden Treasure is a celebration of the great outdoors encouraging people to experience nature and the adventure of geocaching,” said Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater Senior Staff Biologist Maureen O’Keefe.

“We have fun putting the show on every day, and we want visitors to walk away smiling – and feeling like they’ve learned something new.”

Showtimes: June 20-Labor Day: Noon and 3:30 p.m. daily

What is geocaching? It’s an outdoor treasure hunt in which you use navigation and other skills to find small “caches” others leave behind. Each cache contains small trinkets. You take something; you leave something. But these are just small tokens. The real treasures are the time you spend with family and friends, the appreciation of plants and animals you’ll gain and the new outdoor skills that will stay with you for life.
