Join Tacoma Historical Society for stories from Tacoma's Past

Join us at Tacoma History Museum, 919 Pacific Avenue, for free events connected with our newest exhibit – “Be Our Guest: Tacoma Hotel 1884-1935.”

Saturday, August 16th, 1 pm: “Totem Tales and Jack the Bear Stories”

Join popular storyteller Deb Freedman for an afternoon of stories from Tacoma'’s past, suitable for adults and children above the age of six. Downtown Tacoma offers all-day street parking for just $1.50 on Saturdays.

(Third) Thursday, August 21st, 6:15 pm: Tacoma Historical Society’s Neighborhood Walk. Meet at the Tacoma History Museum in the historic Provident Building, 919 Pacific Avenue, for a neighborhood walk led by Tacoma Public Library’s Brian Kamens.

Follow in the pawprints of the former Tacoma Hotel’s pet bear Jack, in conjunction with Tacoma Historical Society’s exhibit “Be Our Guest: Tacoma Hotel 1884-1935.” Free to the public, the Tacoma History Museum will be open on third Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm.

(Third) Thursday, September 18, 6:15 pm: Tacoma Historical Society’s “Man Behind the Totem”

Ever wonder how downtown Tacoma ended up with a totem pole in Fireman’s Park? Hear the story from the original donor, W. F. Sheard, as portrayed by re-enactor Rich Repp. From orphan to fur trapper, from inventor to civic-minded businessman, Sheard’s tale is rich and colorful.

(Third) Thursday, October 16, 11 am - 8 pm: Tacoma Historical Society Firefighters’ Open House

Tacoma Historical Society welcomes area firefighters to stop in to remember one of Tacoma’s great disasters – the loss of the Tacoma Hotel by fire on October 17, 1935. The open house also honors one of the Tacoma Fire Department’s successes - no loss of life in the fire.
