KING 5 Meteorologist Jeff Renner's Underwater Forecast: Wet with 100 Percent Chance of Sharks

KING 5 weatherguy Jeff Renner didn’t just broadcast a story about Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. He did it live. Underwater. With sharks swimming around him.

Did we mention he did it underwater. Yep, that’s right.

Renner, a longtime mainstay on KING 5 and a meteorologist with interest in not only what goes on with the weather but with happenings on in the air, on the land and in the water, broadcast live from the zoo’s South Pacific Aquarium on May 22.

The zoo’s shark exhibit was featured on the 5 pm and 6:30 pm news that evening.

The segments featured interviews with Dive Safety Officer and Staff Biologist Heidi Wilken about the zoo’s Eye-to-Eye Shark Dive program and the perils facing sharks in the world’s oceans.

Zoo staff joked that the Jeff Renner weather report for that night was “Wet with a 100 percent chance of sharks!”

Another weatherman gave the in-studio weather reports that evening, then the station cut to Jeff for more of his interview with Heidi. Over the course of the two news broadcasts, he did five live spots.

If you’re interested in the zoo’s Eye-to-Eye Shark Dives go to pdza.org/dive.

There are two types of dives available. Cage Dives for ages 8 and up. No diving experience is necessary for these. Divers breathe surface supplied air while standing in an underwater cage to view the zoo’s 17 sharks.

The scuba dives, for ages 15 and up, are for certified divers only. Those divers swim into the underwater shark exhibit with a diver-guide and get an even closer view of the sharks.

More than 2,000 people have taken advantage of the program – and learned about shark conservation – since the program opened in October.
