Meadow Park Golf Course hosts second annual Tacoma Open Sept. 11-13

Golfers seeking a challenge are sure to find it at the Tacoma Open golf tournament at Metro Parks’ Meadow Park Golf Course from Sept. 11 to 13.
It’s a chance for amateurs to experience a professional style golf tournament with some of the region’s most talented professionals while supporting healthy opportunities to play, learn and grow through the game of golf.
“We’re expecting a full field of 160 players,” said Chris Goodman, course superintendent. He believes the success of the inaugural event, the 2014 Tacoma Open, is sure to attract increased interest in the sequel.
Already, the upcoming Open has been endorsed by last year’s winner, Web.com Tour player Andrew Yun, a Tacoma native. Local PGA Tour players have given the tournament a thumbs-up include the brothers Michael and Andrew Putnam, also Tacoma natives; Troy Kelly, of Tacoma; and Andres Gonzales of Lakewood.
Several of the region’s top golf course professionals also have endorsed the Tacoma Open, including Brian Thornton, of Meridian Valley Golf & Country Club in Kent; Chris Griffin, of Tacoma Golf & Country Club in Lakewood; and Derek Barron, of Tacoma Firs Golf Center in Tacoma.
“This is a very unusual tournament. There is nothing quite like it in the Northwest,” Goodman said. That’s because of both its professional format and the quality of players. It’s a 54-hole event, with cuts after 36 holes. All pros and amateurs are guaranteed at least two days of play.
After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the 30 lowest scorers among professionals and the 15 lowest gross scorers and 15 lowest net scorers among the amateurs. The total purse exceeds $50,000.
Sponsors of the 2015 Tacoma Open are Apex Engineering, Food Services of America, International Association of Firefighters Local 31, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 286, Northwest Minority Supplier Development Council, Olympic Eagle Distributing, PlayKleen, Rainbird Irrigation/Horizon Distributors, Rhodes & Associates, Spare Space Co., T.E.
