Native Garden's 50th Anniversary Celebration and Dedication

Help celebrate the Northwest Native Plant Garden’s 50th anniversary and dedicate Mary's Meadow after its recent restoration, from 10 am-12 pm on Saturday, August 9.

The Native Garden at Point Defiance Park has displayed and maintained the native flora of the Pacific Northwest since 1964. With its breathtaking waterfall, tranquil pond, and 1 1/2 acres of plant life, the garden has become a staple in the Tacoma area.

The public is invited to come celebrate those 50 years and the noble efforts of the Tacoma Garden Club volunteers who have spent countless hours maintaining the garden’s beauty and have been instrumental in the maintenance and development of this Northwest treasure. Metro Parks Tacoma and the Tacoma Garden Club will host garden tours, a kids’ scavenger hunt, educational activities, ribbon cutting ceremony and more.

The event will also include a dedication to the newly restored Mary’s Meadow in the heart of the garden. With help from a grant funded by the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, the meadow was given new life and will be dedicated and officially named after Mary Williams—a past volunteer who had an undying love for the Tacoma area and the Native Garden.

The celebration will be held in the Native Garden at Point Defiance Park, 5400 N. Pearl Street. Parking will be available on North Park Ave., in the park bowl parking stalls and in the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium parking lot.
