Night work closes lanes, ramps in Tacoma for HOV construction

Nighttime drivers using Interstate 5 in Tacoma will encounter numerous lane and ramp closures as crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation continue construction efforts related to future I-5 HOV lanes.

Much of the work is weather dependent and could be rescheduled to a later date.

During each weeknight, Monday through Friday, Nov. 3-7, southbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane in areas of I-5 from M Street to Portland Avenue. Crews will begin with a single lane closure at 8 p.m. and progressively close lanes throughout the evening. All lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. each following morning.

Concurrent lane closures will also occur on northbound I-5. At 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Nov. 3-6, drivers can expect single lane closures. A second northbound lane will close later each evening. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. each following morning.

Two ramps will also close next week:

  • Monday-Friday  - Close the City Center/southbound I-705/State Route 7 on-ramp to southbound I-5 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Thursday - Close State Route 167 (River Road) on-ramp to southbound I-5 from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday.

Signed detours will be provided for the ramp closures.

The work is related to the I-5 M Street to Portland Avenue - HOV project
