Pacific Avenue ramp reopening, I-5 changes configuration

Crews working on the I-5 – M Street to Portland Avenue – HOV project are replacing the original surface of Interstate 5 in Tacoma. In order for the work to continue on southbound I-5, a new traffic switch is in place. 

These changes will follow the reopening of the Pacific Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-5, which has been closed for construction since late March.

The reconfiguration signals a new stage of construction for the project. 

Reconfigurations 

• Drivers heading to southbound I-5 from both Interstate 705 and Pacific Avenue to continue along the South 38th Street collector/distributor. Drivers will connect to southbound I-5 south of SR 16. 

• Southbound I-5 drivers heading to either South 38th Street or westbound SR 16 also will need to merge into the right lanes of southbound I-5 before reaching the construction zone. 

The ramp and I-5 lanes will remain in this temporary configuration through summer.

Lane closures 

Monday through Wednesday, April 18-20 

• Drivers can anticipate night single- and double-lane closures on northbound or southbound I-5 between M Street and Portland Avenue. 

Thursday, April 21 

• All lanes of mainline northbound I-5 near South 38th Street will close from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday, April 22. Northbound drivers will be routed onto the parallel northbound I-5 collector/distributor lanes and detoured via either State Route 7 or Interstate 705. 

Friday, April 22 

• Drivers can anticipate night single and double-lane closures on northbound or southbound I-5 between M Street and Portland Avenue.

Tuesday, April 19 

• Northbound I-5 exit to SR 167 (River Road) will close from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 

• East 27th Street on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning. 

• Southbound I-705 on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. 

• Northbound I-5 collector/distributor lane exit to Interstate 705 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 

Wednesday, April 20
• Southbound I-5 exit to City Center will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. 

• Portland Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. 

• SR 167 on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. 

Friday, April 22 

• Southbound I-705 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning. 

Long term ramp closures

Northbound SR 7 on-ramp to southbound I-5 is closed for construction through winter 2017.
A Street on-ramp to northbound I-5/southbound SR 7 is closed for construction through project completion.
