Park(ing) Day to Parklets

Tacoma, Wash. – Cities around the world are taking Park(ing) Day to the next level by creating permanent parklets. What is Park(ing) Day and why would we want permanent parklets? Join the discussion this Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 from noon to 1 p.m. at UW Tacoma (Joy 215).

Three speakers will present concepts in Pecha Kucha format (20 slides, 20 seconds each) followed by a discussion on the topic of public space and "parklets" (or mini parks), just in time to get you excited for Tacoma Park(ing) Day!

Speakers include:

·         Brian Wilson, City of Olympia

·         Josh Jorgensen, Tacoma Housing Authority, Property Management Assistant/Tacoma Enthusiast

·         Gareth Roe, BCRA

Then join thousands of downtown employees, residents and visitors for Park(ing) Day next Friday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. throughout downtown. Park(ing) Day is an international event meant to promote thoughtfulness about how we use physical space in a way that is fun and engaging to the community. Downtown On the Go coordinates spaces throughout downtown and leads a walk to different spots at noon.

Both events are free and open to the public. The forum at UWT is accessible by Pierce Transit routes 1, 41, 53, 400, 500, and 501 and Tacoma Link. On-street bike parking is available. For details and to RSVP visit the Facebook event.

DOTG’s Friday Forums are a chance to learn about transportation issues and opportunities in Tacoma, discuss real challenges facing downtown commuters and residents, and hear about new ideas in the transportation world.

Thanks to BLRB Architects for sponsoring our quarterly Friday Forum series.
