Pierce Transit Leads the Way For Dome District Development

Lakewood, WA –Pierce Transit’s Board of Commissioners approved a resolution authorizing staff to enter into exclusive negotiations with Cody Development Corporation for the sale of property to be used for Transit Oriented Development (TOD). The project would be the first TOD in Tacoma’s Dome District and the first sizeable housing project there, developing approximately 100 apartments and ground floor retail.

Pierce Transit bought the property at 415 East 25th Street Tacoma, WA, in 1999 for construction staging for Tacoma Dome Station. Located across the street from Freighthouse Square and adjacent to the Tacoma Dome Station, this property is a prime TOD with walkable access to Pierce Transit local routes, Sound Transit Regional Express routes, Intercity Transit Olympia Express routes,

Tacoma Link Light Rail, Sounder Train, Greyhound and, in 2017, Amtrak. “The Dome District is fortunate to have Pierce Transit prioritize their property for quality development in our community like this. We are excited to see Transit Oriented Development move forward on this property and look forward to what this development will bring to the district for our future.” Said Janice McNeal, resident and President of the Dome Business Districts.

Pierce Transit and the City of Tacoma Community and Economic Development Department began working jointly in 2014 to seek a developer to implement a Transit Oriented Development. Of the proposals submitted, Cody Development Cooperation is the most feasible to move forward to the next step. Their initial proposal includes five floors of mixed market rate apartments over two floors of retail and parking.

“The Tacoma Dome Station is the only transit hub in the region that accommodates every mode of transportation imaginable. This mixed-use development will serve as a catalyst for future investments in the Dome District.,” said City of Tacoma Mayor and Pierce Transit Commissioner Marilyn Strickland.

The Board’s action allows Cody Development Corporation to work exclusively with the agency for 90-120 days for both parties to complete their due diligence.
