Saturday is Half-Price Mom's Day at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

Moms get half off general admission; it’s a great time for a family outing and there’s a lot new to “zoo”

TACOMA, Wash. – There’s a lot new to see and “zoo” at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, and there’s no better time for a family outing than Saturday, when all mothers will receive half-off general admission.

Half-Price Moms’ Day is a tradition at the zoo, where the new live-animal show, “Indiana Bones and the Golden Treasure,” opened last weekend at the Zoo’s Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater.

In addition, everyone who comes into the zoo between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. can enter a drawing for a close encounter with harbor seals. They may even get to feed them.

Drawings for the harbor seal close encounter are held every Saturday and Sunday.

Also on Saturday, all moms will receive a 50 percent discount on the Zoom zip line, which opened for the season last weekend.

Although the admission and zip line discounts aren’t available on Sunday, there will be a number of special eventsto celebrate moms.

Sunday is Marvelous Mother’s Day, and several animals will receive special enrichments.

At  11 a.m. in the Kids’ Zone area of the zoo, meerkats will get to play with boomer balls.

At 12:30 p.m., Sumatran tiger Jaya, mother to Dumai and Kali, will receive a special “Mother’s Day Brunch” consisting of a bone shank.

And at 3 p.m., the harbor seals will enjoy enrichment toys with fish inside and ice treats studded with fish. Harbor seal moms Qilak and Shila each gave birth to a pup last year. Saya and Hogan will each be a year old  in June.

In addition, the colorful budgies are back, and they’ll fly right up to visitors’ hands to eat the seeds on special sticks that can be purchased for $1 for zoo members or $1.50 for non-members.

Plus, the new Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater live-animal show, “Indiana Bones and the Golden Treasure,” is a must-see. It’s an action-packed, fast-paced show featuring more than a dozen animals, catchy music and Herald the dog flying in on an airplane.

Shows are at noon and 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
