Sept. 22 Downtown to Defiance Sunday Parkways Road Closure and Traffic Information

On Sept. 22, 2013, residents can expect one lane of traffic to close along Tacoma’s scenic waterfront roads for cycling and pedestrian use only as participants travel from the Tacoma Dome to Point Defiance Park.

During the Sunday Parkways event, drivers can travel north via Stadium Way to Tacoma Avenue.

The Sunday Pathways Downtown to Defiance active transportation route starts at the Tacoma Dome and travels along the waterfront to Point Defiance Park. As a result, D Street to Schuster Parkway will be one-way, non-motorized access only between 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. with several additional conditions and closures to motorized vehicles:

Tacoma Dome Area

  • D Street closed from Wiley to E. 26th streets from 7:30 a.m. to noon
  • Northbound D Street closed from E. 26th to Dock streets from 7:30 a.m. to noon

Foss Waterway/Dock Street Area

  • D to 15th streets closed from 8 to 9 a.m.
  • Dock Street southbound (the railroad track side) open for limited access between 
  • Schuster Parkway and 15th Street from 8 to 9 a.m.
  • Dock Street northbound (the water side) closed to motorized vehicles from 8 a.m. to noon

Schuster Parkway Area

  • Schuster Parkway northbound (the water side) closed from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Schuster Parkway open southbound

 Ruston Way Area

  • The hill-side lane of Ruston Way will be open for vehicle traffic between North 49th and McCarver streets from 8 a.m. to noon.
  • The water-side lane of Ruston Way will be closed for vehicle traffic
  • Vehicle access to Ruston Way will be at North 49 and Alder streets
  • Access to businesses on Ruston Way will be available during the event

Point Defiance Park Area

  • Tacoma Dome Area Foss Waterway/Dock Street Area Dock Street northbound (the water side) closed to motorized vehicles  from 8 a.m. to noon Schuster Parkway Area Ruston Way Point Defiance Park
  • Main entrance closed to vehicular traffic from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Ferry Road and Marina Complex will be open.
  • Drivers are advised to use the Mildred Street Entrance for access to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Fort Nisqually Living History Museum and Owen Beach through the noon hour

The City of Tacoma invites residents to join this active celebration of our vibrant waterfront that marks the opening of an interim trail connecting Ruston Way to Point Defiance Park. It will serve as a temporary connection during the next two years while a permanent 20-foot wide path is created to provide scenic, safe and direct, non-motorized access from the waterfront to Point Defiance Park.
