Springtime in the Garden

Free events for gardeners to be held at Point Defiance Park in March.
March 1: Rose Pruning Demo
A rose-pruning demonstration will be held from 9 am to noon on March 1 at the Rose Garden in Point Defiance Park. Consulting rosarians from the Tacoma Rose Society and Metro Parks staff will demonstrate rose-pruning techniques and share information on how to care for roses and get them ready for the growing season. The event is free of charge.
Guests will be able to observe various rose-pruning and care techniques up-close, and can try their hand at pruning in the garden. Those who wish to attend should bring a notepad and pen for taking notes, any rose gardening implements they’d like to try out (pruners, gloves, etc.), and weather-appropriate attire, since the demonstration will be held outside, regardless of the weather.
March 22: Garden Sale to Benefit Rose Gardens
A Garden Sale to benefit the Metro Parks’ Rose Gardens will be held from 9 am to 3 pm on March 22 at the Point Defiance Pagoda. Sponsored by the Tacoma Rose Society, the sale will feature roses grown by Metro Parks’ staff and Tacoma Rose Society members, as well as roses donated by several local nurseries. Other plants and an eclectic mix of garden treasures will also be for sale.
Proceeds will fund the purchase of new roses for the Rose Garden in Point Defiance Park. Call 591-5328 for more information, or to donate items for sale at the event.
