TACOMA HOV Projects: Northbound and southbound I-5 in Tacoma reduced to one lane overnight

Overnight and early morning drivers traveling on Interstate 5 in the Tacoma area are encouraged to plan for delays. 

Crews will reduce one direction of I-5 to one lane and redirect that one lane through interchanges during the overnight hours of Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 25-27. 

Each closure will begin with evening with single- and double-lane closures. 

Early morning lane closures: 

1 a.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 
• Southbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane. The one lane will be redirected through Exit #135/Portland Avenue. 

1 a.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26 
• Southbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane. The one lane will be redirected through Exit #135/Portland Avenue. 

1 a.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27 
• Northbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane. The one lane will be redirected through Exit #134/28th Street. 

Signed detours will direct drivers. 

In addition, drivers can expect night single- and double-lane closures in segments of both northbound and southbound I-5 between M Street in Tacoma and the Port of Tacoma Road in Fife. 

Ramp closures 
Monday, Aug. 24 
• Southbound State Route 167 on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 
• Northbound I-5 collector/distributor exit to both State Route 7 and northbound Interstate 705 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 

Tuesday, Aug. 25 
• Southbound SR 167 on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 
• Northbound I-5 collector/distributor exit to both SR 7 and northbound I-705 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 

Wednesday, Aug. 26 
• Bay Street on-ramp to northbound SR 167 will close from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 
• Northbound I-5 collector/distributor exit to both SR 7 and northbound I-705 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 

Thursday, Aug. 27 
• Bay Street on-ramp to northbound SR 167 will close from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning. 

Friday, Aug. 28 
• Northbound I-5 collector/distributor exit to both SR 7 and northbound I-705 will close from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. 

Extended weekend ramp closure 
11 p.m. Friday Aug. 28 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31 
Northbound I-5 collector/distributor exit to both State Route 7 and northbound Interstate 705 will close. 

Saturday, Aug. 29 
• East 28th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m.
