Tacoma Snow Plows on City Streets Next Two Saturdays

Drivers Can Also Prepare Now for Winter Driving

Tacoma residents shouldn’t be surprised this Saturday and next if they spot snow plows out and about. It’s all part of the City’s efforts to be prepared for winter snowstorms. On Oct. 12 and 19, City snow plow drivers will train on operating emergency snow vehicles along snow routes.

Of the 855 arterial miles that the City of Tacoma maintains, the City can only address 412 of them as top priority snow and ice routes. This means that when a snowstorm hits, residents need to do their part to be prepared for winter driving conditions, particularly on residential roads which aren’t normally plowed. Resident can prepare now by:

• Researching public transportation options.
• Preparing vehicles with good tires, windshield wipers, chains, sand and emergency supplies.
• Planning drive routes prioritized by primary, then secondary and then auxiliary routes as outlined on the City’s snow and ice map.
• If you live on a hill or somewhere difficult to access in the snow, scout places to legally park your vehicle on nights when snow is forecasted. Choose locations where putting on chains can be done safely.
• If you live or work on a primary, secondary or auxiliary plow route, scout an adjacent street to legally park on. Doing so will prevent your vehicle from getting covered or blocked in by plowed snow and make it easier for City crews to plow your street.
