Tacoma Symphony and Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound partner on family concerts

TACOMA, WA- In its second season, Tacoma Symphony Orchestra's Mini Maestros family concert series is set to expand into South Pierce County.  The Tacoma Symphony is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound to present performances at its Lakewood Branch (10402 Kline Street SW, Lakewood) on Saturday, April 5th and Saturday, May 3rd, presenting the brass and percussion family of instruments, respectively.  Attendees are invited to participate in an instrument petting zoo, an opportunity to hold and try out various instruments at 3pm on these days, with the performance beginning at 4pm.  Admission is free, but reservations are required by calling 253-502-4660.  The project is being funded by a crowd-sourced fundraising initiative presented in partnership with ArtsFund and power2give.org/pugetsound.

The Mini Maestro family concert series was piloted in 2013 with the help of project partners University of Puget Sound, the Bamford Foundation, Ted Brown Music and the Washington State Arts Commission.  Now in its second season, this series features informal concerts specially created for children ages 2-8 and their grown ups.  Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, with the full orchestra, opens the series and is then followed by three programs for smaller ensembles -- providing for an interactive, close encounter with the musicians.  With curriculum prepared by Early Childhood Learning experts, the 45 minute informances feature elements to get the children engaged both physically and mentally.

Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound seek to give kids a place to call their own, where they can have fun, get a hot meal, be creative, be a part of a team, get help with homework...or just hang out with friends.  The Clubs offer safe, fun, inclusive, and inspiring places that kids and their families count on--every day.  While Tacoma Symphony Orchestra offers its full family series at the University of Puget Sound, this partnership provides an opportunity to bring the classical music experience directly to kids and their families in Lakewood.

ArtsFund works in the Puget Sound to strengthen the community by supporting the arts through leadership, advocacy and grantmaking.  ArtsFund launched power2give/PugetSound on October 1, 2013.  The site is active and evolving.  As of March 14, power2give.org/PugetSound has brought in over $234,000 in donations from over 900 unique donors.  All funds donated through the site are currently being matched 1:1 by local foundations.
